Reading this water — reservoir

A reservoir is a flooded valley with the old ground still underneath it. Read the land above the waterline and continue it downward, then let the current water level tell you which of that structure is actually in play today.

The old river channel

Find it: Follow the shape of the valley above the waterline and read it downward — the channel usually runs where the ground falls away fastest.

Why: Rock holds heat and crayfish, and the transitions — rock to clay, rock to timber — concentrate fish far more than the middle of a long rock bank.
