What this plate is telling you

What the middle band is. growth optimum and the temperature band the authors recommend for thermal protection. A growth optimum is measured on juveniles fed all they can eat and a survey mode is where a net found the most of them; neither is the fish choosing, and both are worth less weight than a preferendum for deciding where to stand today.

What the edges are. No cold edge published. Warm edge: 60-day ultimate upper incipient lethal (19.6 °C); the conventional 7-day figure is 24.1 °C. These are not one consistent quantity across species. A measured avoidance temperature is where fish were seen leaving; a water-quality maximum is a regulatory ceiling written to prevent a kill, and it sits well above the point a day gets difficult.

Saturation is the most this water could hold if it were in equilibrium with the air. Real water sits below it — respiration, decomposition and a weed bed at four in the morning all take oxygen out — so the curve is an upper bound on a good day, never a measurement. Only a meter in the water tells you what is actually there.

What this plate is telling you

Why the curve falls. Gas solubility drops as temperature rises. Water at 80°F cannot hold what the same water held at 50°F, whatever lives in it. That is why a summer warm spell and a fish kill turn up in the same week, and why the cold layer at the bottom of a stratified lake — perfect temperature, no resupply from the surface since spring — can be the emptiest water in it.

Arms warm and colour up first, hold spawning and staging fish, and give shelter when the main body is unfishable.
How to find it
Work from the mouth of an arm inward. The secondary point inside the arm is often better than the main-lake point outside it.

Standing timber and flooded structure

What it is
Drowned trees, fence lines, roadbeds, foundations and bridges left in place when the valley was filled.
Why fish hold there
Vertical cover in open water: it holds fish at every depth and marks exactly where the old ground contour was.
How to find it
